Yahoo Mail Beta review

Today, when i signed on to yahoo mail , there was a surprise for me.. It carried me to a well layed out screen asking for confirmation on trying Yahoo Beta Mail service.!! WOW!! Atlast they selected me for a trial.

Yahoo mail beta was launced on last agust or something and i enrolled for a beta testing on december, after their second beta release. And it took’em 3 months to approve me!! :P Any way, I’m in now. So its my 3rd beta testing in a week after Yahoo messenger 7.5 Beta and Internet Explorer 7 Beta.
Yahoo Mail Beta has a Gmail like AJAX interface now. That is it preloads everything including your mails, and when you click on the mail from inbox, it shows the content in a tab with out blocking inbox view. Its just like using Outbox.

Yahoo Mail Beta Inbox view

It has a new way to add RSS feeds into your mail folder. For me, it’s nothing shocking. I already pull RSS feeds into Outlook folders and read them in exactly this way. But it’s nice for those who want this feature in a web-based email system.By default, if you click the Add button next to your All RSS Feeds folder, a window pops-up where you’re offered to enter feeds from places like the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, News.com, Salon, Digital Photography Review and — of course — the neo999.com. :D OK, I joke about that last one. We don’t make that cut. But if you want this site or anything not listed, you can paste the feed into the Address box at the bottom of the Add window.

Feeds on Yahoo Mail Beta

What’s very, very nice is that if you already have a My Yahoo account with feeds added, Yahoo Mail automatically lists those feeds within your All RSS Feeds folder. Great foresight on that, Yahoo!.Have multiple feeds? Each feed gets its own subfolder within the All RSS Feeds folder. You can click on a subfolder and read posts just for that feed.

Yahoo Beta Mail features drag-and-drop folder operations, multiple tabs, and more. That is, you can drag a mail from inbox to your spam folder or any other folder. Its simple!

Drag and drop feature in yahoo Mail Beta

And the Multiple tabs.. Tabs as i said in my last post is one of my favorite feature! It adds to the usability. In Yahoo Mail Beta ,you have the tab feature. If you are viewing inbox and suddenly want to compose a message, you can do it without closing inbox.Just click the compose button and a new tab is opened within the yahoo mail interface! Something that i wanted in Gmail.

Combose and inbox - tabbed option in yahoo mail beta

Now, i wanted to test yahoo beta on IE beta.. :) But yahoo beta still doesnt support IE7 .:(

Yahoo Mail Beta on Internet Explorer 7 Beta(IE7 Beta)

So, everything is fine till now,and i found some glitches.Something which can annoy you to the very extend if you are a hardcore mailer like me.

# I can’t view or sort by whether read/unread status.

# I used to be able to attach multiple files in one go … now I have to do it one at a time.

# There used to be an advanced search that allowed me to narrow down results. It seems to be missing.

In the old Yahoo Mail I used to set my items per page setting to the maximum — 200. The page would still load quick and I could scroll through the topmost 200 emails quickly and easily (and use Ctrl-F, like I mentioned above). The new Yahoo Mail doesn’t have “pages”, it’s just one giant page that loads as I scroll. There’s two problems with this: One, the load time is slow so instead of getting 200 at a time like I used to, I get one screen’s worth, and everytime the scroll bar moves just a bit, it reloads. The other is that my inbox has 3000 Messages. This makes the scrollbar very tiny, dragging it just a pixel seems to change the view in an unknown amount. Did I just skip 10 message, or 100? I don’t know. Both of these aspects add up to making it not just difficult, but impossible to visually scan a folder, even when it has as few as 75 emails in it. This
is a huge loss.

It is in no way shape or form, better than gmail except for its tabbed structure. Gmail is a MUCH better online email service. Nothing really compares to gmail as of yet even with yahoo’s new offering..The new yahoo mail beta acts and looks like a computer application, but its code is much slower than Gmail. It may get better in its final release.

So for now, Gmail is the best!

Internet explorer 7 – beta Review

Microsoft has released a second beta version of IE7 which includes new features like the long awaited tabbed browsing. It supports RSS feed with enclosure unlike IE6 that only displayed the text in an RSS feed.I usually use FireFox as i am fedup with IE6.But now, i wanted to try IE7 with tabbed browsing(the part i like most in FireFox) . I installed the browser and then it asks for a check on “Genuine Window”. I was using a PIRATED copy and it confirmed my version as a GENUINE ONE!! :D After a restart IE7 was ready for a try.

First i opened Google and a nice looking pop up asked me for setting google as the default search engine for IE. Well, i downloaded the file(13.5 kb) and installed google engine .

Google Search Engine Option in IE7

Another option in IE7 is to check for Phishing sites. We can turn it on or off..If its on, every address is checked with microsoft Phishing DataBase.
When i checked IE7 with my own site (www.neo999.com) the site was rendered shortly after chekin with microsoft phishing DataBase. It takes a little bit time to check with DB..

Phishing Test in IE7

Check that indication(marked in red) for phishing check. It takes a bit extra time for this check, and so i turned it off.
IE7 support multi tabbed browsing.Unlike in firefox there is a small button next to the latest tab for opening a new tab.
New Tab Button

I heard from somewhere that IE7 can show previews of tabs when you hover mouse over it..But i cant find such an option in my beta copy. :(

Now the stress test.
Even though it uses less memory, opening multiple tabs costs too much cpu power..

CPU USAGE
Here i opened 4 tabs in a single IE7 window and look at the cpu utilization.I dont know why Explorer.exe is also taking this much cpu power. And now what? yea..as usual .. A CRASH!!! Lesson 1: Never test a microsot product for stability!

Another important feature in IE7 is the integrated feed reade..Its pretty good.. :) My server was down at the time of test (PHP rebuild or something..so i cant check it on my blog..so i checked it with Duttan ’s blog )
Feeds on Internet Explorer 7
Clean and simple..I liked it very much..
You also have the advantage of being able to have “multiple” home pages and you can select anyone you want, more or less like a mini favourites.
They have also implemented a nice print preview and you can zoom in and out of any page.Microsoft now has an addon shop for IE7 where you can find lots of pluggins for IE7

Addons on Microsoft Market

IE7 is far far better than IE6 and have much more features than Firefox 2.0 .But its not stable.Final version may fix it up.

Google calendar and Google office Suite!

Gotta love this. Two juicy Google-related pieces

* Via Paul Stamatiou, TechCrunch is carrying screenshots of the new Google Calendar application, provisionally known as CL2.
* Now, Google have bought Writely, the web-based word processor. Shrewd move, Writely is a very popular Web 2.0 app. Nothing I’d like more than to log on to it with my Google account details.

Now, is it just me, or does this lend serious weight to the argument that Google is planning it’s own OS? Let’s face it, with Gmail, a calender application and now a word processor, all they need now is a spreadsheet program and something to manage tasks and that’s Microsoft Office effectively replaced.

And guess what, interoperability issues (in documents) would fly out the window, because everyone would be using (X)HTML. And platform would be irrelevant, because it runs via your browser! Of course, you’d be completely screwed if you ever lost your Internet connection…..

I’m not going to go down the “Microsoft should be quaking in their boots” route, but since Office is a bread and butter product for Microsoft, an essentially free alternative via the web is an attractive proposition. It might also be attractive to those millions out there currently using hacked versions of Office!

Google Adsense Trick to avoid Cancellation

If you are testing your new website layout or tweaking something , you might be reloading your website pages again-n-again. And if these pages contain Google Ads, each time your reload your page, you make a request to Google Ads Server for a new set of ads. Certainly Google is unaware that you are testing your website and it might even penalize your account for “click-fraud” since the IP requesting ads remains same. And if in the worst-case scenario, you might accidently click on your own ads. And these extra “ad impressions” will also chance your CTR data.Thats exactly what happened to my adsense account and now it got cancelled. And I was forced to use chitika. Now if you have and adsense account and you earning from it,Never ever try any fraud tricks to get more money.Once your account get cancelled ,its really really hard to get a new one.Even if you change your webpage url and email id.More over i think google guys are now more strict in approving adsense registration requests.

One simple way to avoid this serious problem is to remove the Adsense code altogether from your page before testing. But this may not be the best solution as your Google Ads are an important part of your layout. So here are a few simple but effective workarounds:

1. Instead of using Adsense code, add a static graphic (jpg image) with the same dimesions as your adsense code. (Google itself provides static images of various ad formats.)

2. Modify the value of google_ad_client to something like “pub-googleIamTesting”

3. Add another line to Google Adsense code google_adtest = “on”; Don’t forget the semicolon.

4. Though there is no official comment, it is safer to remove the google_ad_channel variable.

Or contact Google Adsense Team with your query. Google folks are very quick to respond. Google AdSense policies require that websites displaying Google ads be active and not under construction. When your site is complete and active, you may add the AdSense ad code.

PS: An adsense account in your site is worthier than 3 chitika/yahoo accounts.. :P Because ,no matter how hard you work, you are never gonna earn more than your adsense from chitika or yahoo.

K750 >> N90 ! Point #1 – K750 and N90 camera comparison

MobileBurn has an article that compares & contrasts the photographic capabilities of two relatively new 2 megapixel cameraphones : the Sony Ericsson K750 and the Nokia N90.

In a close call, the reviewer gives the edge to the Sony Ericsson K750. The cameras in these two phones were evaluated on the basis of sharpness, white balance, exposure, contrast, focus and low light performance.

The K750 won on the basis of its sharper lens … surprising in view of the N90’s much-vaunted Carl Zeiss optics and high price!!

Keypoints from The review :
Both are 2 megapixel units, both have auto focusing capability, and both have a history of cameras in the family (Sony’s digital cameras and Zeiss’ lenses). The K750’s camera has a slightly wider field of view, and seems to be a bit “faster” than the N90’s (meaning it needs less light) .The optical quality of the K750’s camera, which is much physically smaller than the N90’s camera, turned out to be superior in most every way. What the N90 did excel at, however, was taking photos that were generally more pleasing to the eye and less “digital” looking.
Sony Ericsson K750’s camera is capable of resolving finer detail than the Nokia N90 can. This means that small print is more readable, thin stripes stay visible, and subtle surface textures are more easily seen. You’ll also see that the K750 inflicts far less lens distortion on the photos it takes. But on the other side of the coin, you’ll see that the N90’s colors are warmer and more pleasant looking (if not always the most accurate). The N90 photos also have more color saturation, which makes them pop a bit more. Its exposure settings are, to my eyes, also closer to the ideal in more circumstances. On top of that, the N90 seems to be able to obtain focus more consistently.

So what we have is a case of the electronics company, Sony, coming up with a better lens, and the optics/phone company partnership, Zeiss and Nokia, coming up with better software and post-processing of the images. Exactly the opposite from what I was expecting.

Google hacking!

Google is god!! For hackers too..I tried for various combinations for search strings and found this one pretty much interesting..:D

Try this ..

Search for —   “admin account info” filetype:log

on google..  or click here

This search finds log files containing the phrase (Your password is). These files often contain plaintext passwords. You wont find something by which you can crack down yahoo or amazon servers..But it is funny.. Ok..From the search list check this one.. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jimbooth/%23rezdogs_20020117.log

it seems like a chat log I was interested on it as it was on some cs server..read it and you can find some automated messages where it tells about a new username and password..Try it!

Now some more search strings for you..

–> !Host=*.* intext:enc_UserPassword=* ext:pcf

Some people are foolish enough to keep their VPN profiles on the internet It gives you some VPN profiles. If you know how to use a VPN client(Like Cisco VPN client), download the profiles(pcf file) and yea.!! You are in!!

Now the good old CGI scripts..try this search string

–>> “index of cgi-bin”
CGI directories contain scripts which can often be exploited by attackers. Regardless of the vulnerability of such scripts, a directory listing of these scripts can prove helpful. :) happy hacking dudes!

Again!! Another one… A for Accident for me now!

A for accident for me now..had another one today afternoon. Even though it wasn’t serious , it was a complete stupidity!!! I should have avoided it. That rush in our mind, to go fast, to show our abilities – that’s the thing which ends up in accidents…Atleast in my case. Today , it was all my mistake! I rode at around 80 kmph downhill that had a turning with loose gravels right in the middle of the slope!! That’s was not a surprise  for me..as it was the same road that I used to ride 4 times a day up and down. The same bike ! Nothing was special ……..except my mind… I  gave full throttle till the curve. And got perished on the side drain(no noooo..not the kind of drain you see in trivandrum or cochin!! It was neat and clean and dry!! :D )  . My lucky co-rider was Moncy .He was shouting for slowing down all the way ..But who cares! Well..i am not writing much about it here..I feel guilty now…so its nEo signing off…!!

Anonymous surfing

When i registered my new domain it took up nearly 10 hours for my isp to get it tracked.Just because of their distance from my webhoster. But i got connected to the same domain within 1 hour by using an external public proxy server.Thats a big difference..Ok..now consider this..Some times when you try to access some sites it says “page not available ” or “request timed out” .It doesnt always means that the site is down or doesnt exists. Some times the site owners may block a particular isp from accessing their site or the isp itself may block certain sites from its users. In such cases the only hope is to use an external public proxy. If you got confused, let me explain the basics …

A proxy is a server is like a “buffer-connection” between your computer and the internet resoruces you are accessing. The data you request comes to the proxy first, and then the proxy sends that information on to you.

Anonymous Proxies hide your IP address and thereby prevent internet servers from knowing exactly who you are. Since they do not provide anyone with your IP address, they effectively hide any information about you and your reading interests. Not only that, but most Anonymous proxies hide the fact that you are using a proxy. There are tons of “public proxy servers” out there which are free and open for anyone to use, however most of these are not anonymous.

I am going to focus on finding those free AND anonymous ones. Want to see what your public IP address is (and what other websites know about you) go to www.whatismyip.com

Ok, on with the show…
Using a few google searches, we are able to find TONS of proxy lists.. A good example of a search to use:
+”:8080″+”:3128″+”:80″ filetype:txt

So now you are thinking, well I have a million plus proxies, I can quit reading this article, Right? Wrong. These lists are horribly out of date, proxies come up and go down quite often. You would need to check every IP in every one of those lists to get good proxies, and then test them to see if they were anonymous or not.

Enter the automated tools.
There are possibly thousands of different proxy checking tools out there, but I have yet to find a better one that Charon. (download here) It is a Proxy filtering, searching, and checking utility.. And the best part about it is that it is free.

Screenshot

screenshot

Ok, after you have downloaded Charon, READ THE INCLUDED README FILE!!! Then come back to this article. Ok, now that you have read the Readme, you know how it works, open it up, and click on “Check Proxies” then on “Scan for New Proxies”. Charon will go to Google and start pulling proxy lists and testing them. I let mine run for 10-15 minutes and I had over 300+ proxies.

We are only interested in the ones that are anonymous (Anon column says Yes) So you want to filter those proxies out and save them to a list. You can do this by clicking “Filter List” and then “Delete Non-Anon”. Save this list by clicking the floppy disk icon (top left)

Now How do I use them?
Since you are running Mozzilla Firefox (you are running Firefox Right?) you should go download the Firefox extention: SwitchProxy. SwitchProxy is a FireFox extension that allows you to ‘switch’ between anonymous proxy servers at a chosen interval. =)

After you have installed SwitchProxy, and restarted your browser, you will notice that there is a new proxy toolbar installed. Now we are going to need to import the list of anonymous proxies you have found from the previous step. Click on “Options”, “Preferences”, “Manage Proxies”, “Add”, “Anonymous” and then click next. Give your Proxy set a name such as “Proxylist-TodaysDate” and then click on the “Browse” button and find the the file you saved earlier. Once you have found the file, click on the “Load” button. Now we need to enter a time interval to switch proxies (essentially making your connection appear to bounce around the world)
I personally use 120 seconds, but you can make it longer or shorter to fit your needs. Then click save and ok all the way back out. Now in your toolbar select the proxy list and click apply. You are now using the proxies in your list. Remember our first test? Lets try it again.
Go to whatismyip.com or any other type of proxy checker (http://proxy.snipermedia.net is a good one)and see how your ipaddress has changed. Now websites have no idea who you are! And one of the most “kidilam”(superb) use i found for this anonymous browsing was to cheat google adsense.!!!! Log on from different ips and click ur own adsense links!! :D

Breaking My Habit!

Memories consume
Like opening the wound
I’m picking me apart again
You all assume
I’m safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again

I don’t want to be the one
The battles always choose
‘Cause inside I realize
That I’m the one confused

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don’t know why I instigate
And say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way
I know it’s not alright
So I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit ….Tonight

Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more
Than anytime before
I had no options left again

I dont want to be the one
The battles always choose
‘Cause inside I realize
That I’m the one confused

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don’t know why I instigate
And say what I don’t mean
I don’t know how I got this way
I’ll never be alright
So, I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit Tonight

I’ll paint it on the walls
‘Cause I’m the one at fault
I’ll never fight again
And this is how it ends

I don’t know what’s worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
But now I have some clarity
to show you what I mean
I don’t know how I got this way
I’ll never be alright
So, I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit
I’m breaking the habit Tonight!
