Multiple Home Tabs in Mozilla Firefox
Jan 24th
Anyone who’s used Internet Explorer 7 may enjoy the feature of being able to have multiple home pages open in tabs. Well, you can do this in Firefox too. Go to Tools | Options. In the Main Tab, you should see the box where you type your home page. Simply write each URL you want to open in a tab and separate each with a |
For instance, if you wanted your home tabs to be TheOneGreatX.com, Digg, and Google (very fine choices, I must say) your Home Page Box would read:
http://www.blog.neo999.com|http://www.digg.com|http://www.google.com
So there you have it, one fewer reason not to use IE7.
Kudos to Bsnl
Jun 16th
Competition will ameliorate you.. Atleast thats the case with BSNL and ADL .. The two most accepted broadband providers in Trivandrum and Cochin.. Just after Bsnl introduced an unlimited Broadband plan(256 kbps UL 900 and UL 900 plus) ADL upgraded their existing unlimited homenet to 256kbps. Both ADL and Bsnl have ramped up their Customer care service and now you get quick responses to your queries.I admired ADL for their fast responses to new connection requests. They used to give out new conections with in 4~5 days where as BSNL took almost a month for my DIAS connection. Whatever it may be, its changing now. I booked for BSNL DataOne connection on this Monday(12th June) and they assured me that connection will be ready within 7 days. BSNL Kaimanam AE called me just a few hours ago and told me that my modem is ready and they will come today afternoon .. A new connection within 4 days! Yea, it depends on your exchange but still …
Coming back to ADL..My cousin said she has a new problem with ADL..She loved to call ADL guys and complaint them about noisy connection and drop outs… But now ADL is so smooth ..no dropouts..no blackouts.. Perfect!! And my poor cousin is furious with a No_Complaint_ADL ..
About a comparison between these two , it depends upon your usage. If you are some one who play lots of online games and dont care about upload speed , Bsnl is for you. And if you are a serious seeder, broadcaster, or manages a heavy website which needs daily caring(huge ftp uploads ) ADL is suited for you. ADL gives you a full 256 kbps upload bandwidth while bsnl gives you only a 64kbps uload.(ADL bandwidth is shared – that means total bandwidth (Upload +download )is 256 kbps . You can use a full 256 kbps upload with 0 download or vice versa at the same time..Bsnl on the other hand uses dedicated upload and download channels ) . Moereover there are some other factors which decides the Qos like your locality(distance from exchange ) , and density of users ..
I think it will be my last post from Airtel Gprs connection. I brought back my pc to tvm yesterday . And right now, i am waiting for those bsnl guys …for a good connection…for a fraggig fest with my friends…for all those downloads..
After a long 6 months here i am , waiting to logon to a broadband connection…

Google Adsense Trick to avoid Cancellation
Mar 21st
If you are testing your new website layout or tweaking something , you might be reloading your website pages again-n-again. And if these pages contain Google Ads, each time your reload your page, you make a request to Google Ads Server for a new set of ads. Certainly Google is unaware that you are testing your website and it might even penalize your account for “click-fraud” since the IP requesting ads remains same. And if in the worst-case scenario, you might accidently click on your own ads. And these extra “ad impressions” will also chance your CTR data.Thats exactly what happened to my adsense account and now it got cancelled. And I was forced to use chitika. Now if you have and adsense account and you earning from it,Never ever try any fraud tricks to get more money.Once your account get cancelled ,its really really hard to get a new one.Even if you change your webpage url and email id.More over i think google guys are now more strict in approving adsense registration requests.
One simple way to avoid this serious problem is to remove the Adsense code altogether from your page before testing. But this may not be the best solution as your Google Ads are an important part of your layout. So here are a few simple but effective workarounds:
1. Instead of using Adsense code, add a static graphic (jpg image) with the same dimesions as your adsense code. (Google itself provides static images of various ad formats.)
2. Modify the value of google_ad_client to something like “pub-googleIamTesting”
3. Add another line to Google Adsense code google_adtest = “on”; Don’t forget the semicolon.
4. Though there is no official comment, it is safer to remove the google_ad_channel variable.
Or contact Google Adsense Team with your query. Google folks are very quick to respond. Google AdSense policies require that websites displaying Google ads be active and not under construction. When your site is complete and active, you may add the AdSense ad code.
PS: An adsense account in your site is worthier than 3 chitika/yahoo accounts..
Because ,no matter how hard you work, you are never gonna earn more than your adsense from chitika or yahoo.
20 things you didnt know about windows Xp!
Oct 22nd
You’ve read the reviews and digested the key featureenhancements and operational changes. Now it’s time todelve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP’s secrets
1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previousversions of Windows were coy about how long they wentbetween boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina.Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot ofuseful info, including the uptime. If you want to keepthese, type ‘systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later withNotepad. (Professional Edition only).
2. You can delete files immediately, without havingthem move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Startmenu, select Run… and type ‘ gpedit.msc’; then selectUser Configuration, Administrative Templates, WindowsComponents, Windows Explorer and find the Do not movedeleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it.Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — somemay stop your computer behaving as you wish.(Professional Edition only).
3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks ofthe mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exeuser32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field.Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — justdouble click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.
4. XP hides some system software you might want toremove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickleit and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad orEdit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can thengo to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will beyour prey, exposed and vulnerable.
5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XPhas a number of interesting new commands. Theseinclude ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creatingand watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoringperformance of various subsystems, and ‘schtasks’ forhandling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the commandname followed by /? will give a list of options –they’re all far too baroque to go into here.
6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generationof IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has,so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type’ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at thecommand line to find out more. If you don’t know whatIPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.
7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computerfrom the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and thetask number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number.Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will alsotell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.
8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is niceif you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, youcan make XP leave zip files well alone by typing’regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back asthey were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.
9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing fontdisplay technology — but doesn’t have it enabled bydefault. It’s well worth trying, especially if youwere there for DOS and all those years of staring at ascreen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat.To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, selectClearType from the second drop-down menu and enablethe selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome loginscreen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/ControlPanel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.
10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friendwho’s using network address translation (NAT) on ahome network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit thefile. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IPaddress, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with yourchum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com — and get them to makesure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewalland forwarded to the errant computer.
11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and passwordyou want to use. This only applies for that run. Thetrick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, whichmany require. Note that you can have some fun byrunning programs multiple times on the same system asdifferent users, but this can have unforeseen effects.
12. Windows XP can be very insistent about youchecking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, thenagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go toHKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD valuecalled EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.
13. You can start up without needing to enter a username or password. Select Run… from the start menuand type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open theuser accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password ToUse This Computer, and click on OK. An AutomaticallyLog On dialog box will appear; enter the user name andpassword for the account you want to use.
14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically deletetemporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start thebrowser, select Tools / Internet Options… andAdvanced, go down to the Security area and check thebox to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.
15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, justin case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your networkcard. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area whenconnected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon onthe right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.
16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides toappear, but you can speed things along by changing theregistry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.
17. You can rename loads of files at once in WindowsExplorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, thenright click on one and rename it. All the other fileswill be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder youcan arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View,Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.
18. Windows Media Player will display the cover artfor albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracksfrom the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots ofpre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of thecover art in the same directory as the tracks. Justcall it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pickit up and display it.
19. Windows key + Break brings up the SystemProperties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up thedesktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.
20. The next release of Windows XP, codenamedLonghorn, is due out late next year or early 2006 and won’t be much to write home about. The next bigrelease is codenamed Blackcomb and will be out in 2007.
What Is Cell Phone Cloning Fraud?
Aug 27th
Every cell phone is supposed to have a unique factory-set electronic serial number (ESN) and telephone number (MIN). A cloned cell phone is one that has been reprogrammed to transmit the ESN and MIN belonging to another (legitimate) cell phone. Unscrupulous people can obtain valid ESN/MIN combinations by illegally monitoring
the radio wave transmissions from the cell phones of legitimate subscribers. After cloning, both the legitimate and the fraudulent cell phones have the same ESN/MIN combination and cellular systems cannot distinguish the cloned cell phone from the legitimate one. The legitimate phone user then gets billed for the cloned phone’s calls. Call your carrier if you think you have been a victim of cloning fraud. The fraudster can make calls on your behalf or send messages etc and it would be easy to tarnish your reputation in this manner. For cell phone cloning fraud, the cellular equipment manufacturing industry has deployed authentication systems that have proven to be a very effective countermeasure to cloning, however it still does happen.
There is another interesting method. There are chips available which can be set into a cell phone, you can then gift this cell phone to an unsuspecting victim, provided you know him. Perhaps you can make him win a contest of some sort. The cell phone now becomes your bug, something that the user is sure to carry around with him. You activate it by simply calling this fellow from a preset number. What happens is that he get no inkling that a call is being received, the phone automatically picks it u, there is no change in the display or any indication that the cell phone is now transmitting everything to the person at the other end. So if you are paranoid enough, it makes sense to not accept such gifts from people. If you don’t have any security threat then chances are no ones going to gift you one either! Of course to counter the threat of electronic eavesdropping there are counter measures available such as encryption. Again its not for the usual people, wont be cost effective that way, but you can always find more details. It is an entirely different topic per se and would make material for another article. So keep coming back!
Cell Phone Tapping
Aug 27th
Cell phones have become omnipresent ; no one even spares another glance at someone hurrying along the sidewalk and seems to be talking to his own self. Of course he is using the handsfree and chatting to his contact who may be on the other side of the globe for all we care.
Considering that we use a cell phone even in the presence of a land line now that call rates are mostly on par, perhaps we should be evaluating security concerns about this risk. While it is common knowledge that authorities have had access to our calls, we were satisfied by the fact that this capability could not be mis-used. Even the authorities needed to get permission from a court of law with specific reasons for their wanting to do so. (Of course I assume that you did nothing to piss off the CBI or an agency on that level. In case you already did then God Help You, those people have technology which would leave you dumbstruck, as well as a free hand to use it when they think necessary).
With landlines, it was difficult to tap the phone, especially since they would need to put a physical bug on the wires which meant access to the lines and a kind of sophistication which would not be easily learnt. However with things going wireless, it becomes easier. Interception devices are now available that can record conversations. If you suspected the presence of these things and sent confidential data by SMS, then it was in vain since these things are powerful enough to get these too. To add salt to the wounds, the conversations and messages are neatly indexed and stored in a data base for future reference. These interceptors are cleverly disguised in
forms of briefcases, suitcases or perhaps even a rugged outdoor case (cant be smaller than those since a particular size is required to be effective, maybe with more advances in technology we will have smaller ones.) While they do have their own power units which could last for some time, its better if you gave them a power supply since spying on someone is not something you do for an hour or two. Days of patience are required before you can have results. Don’t worry about power points though, these things are designed to be inconspicuous; you are ready to go even with a car cigarette lighter point.
These portable interception devices cost someplace between 20,000 dollars upwards depending on the features but they do come with a guarantee of getting you behind bars if you are not a law enforcing agent. Another option is to use the cell phone cloning or SIM card cloning method. However this requires you to have access to the device for some time.
Blue DvD

We’ve seen DVDs replacing CDs,But what next??The next on arena are HD-DVD and Blue-Ray Disc. Both use a blue-laser for read-write instead of the usual red laser in curreb\nt generation DVDs.Blue rays have the shortest wave lenght among the visible spectrem. So it can pack more data within the same space. Both HD-DVD and Blure-Ray DVD use Blue laser ,but they use the technology in two ways.Lets go deep into two of’em
Blue-ray discs are more efficient with using the blue laser and pack at least 25GB per layer, whichcan be increased in multiples of 25 as you add more layers and use both sides of the media. The developers are saying that they could introduce 50GB this year and then by 2007 it will reach 200GB.To achieve this they use a completely new technology and hence it costs lot for mass production….lot means…sony released a 23GB Blue ray drive with SCSI and USB interface and the cost is well above 1.25Lakhs Rs.
HD-DVD on the other hand starts with 15 GB per layer and the capacities wud therefore increase in multiples of 15.Blue_ray is definitly a superio technology. But technology alone wont save a product.Production and marketing costs are also important. But HD-DVD maintains some backward compatability with DVD,so the same production facilities can be used to manufacture its products, meaning lesser production cost ,faster time to market and low cost to products. And there is a rumour that Microsoft will ship its upcoming OS Longhorn on HD-DVDs.But Blue-ray is more activewith more than 70 MNCs suppoting it including giant Sony,Hp,JVC,TDK …So at moment it seems like that inspite of the price ,future is with Blue-Ray.But it will not be a surprise if both technologies co-exists like the DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW formats.

Secure ur PC
Mar 30th
Today i had a hard job of cleaning up my pc….it was becoming sloow..was hanging up frequently….the internet explorer was taking me to really UNWANTED sites
…..and more over i felt like someone was tapping my bandwidth…So i realised…its not safe to keep my pc “nude” before the world…i had norton and zonealarm..and google popup blocker…and spybot and adaware…enuf to keep a system in perfect health…But…during gaming sessions i usually close’em all…to save proccessor & memory juice…hmm… so i decided to giv a small guide on online traps to my readers….First of all you should understand what types of threats are there on the net…
While most users are aware of virus and worms threat, they usually overlook the other biggest threat ie the spywares.
Spywares are programs that get installed on your computer without your knowledge and collect data about your usage patterns like what sites you visit, what programs you run, even your personal details like age, gender and financial details too : all those things that can be useful for a marketing company to send you customized advertising. These programs send this data back to their websites where they are given to spammers and advertisers. All these things happen without the user’s knowledge and that is the most ironical point of the story.now we shall look deep into the details…;)
We can categorize spywares as…
Adwares:
Adwares usually monitors your usage patterns and show you ads corresponding to them. Adwares are usually installed as freewares and it is quoted in their EULA (End User License Agreement) that the program will show relevant ads.
Many of the adwares are freeware version of programs which are availible as paid versions. Examples of these programs : Opera, Divx, Download Accelerator Plus, Flashget etc. While these programs specifically tells the user that they can upgrade to their paid version if they dont want to get these advertisements but not every adware is like that…
Browser Hijackers:
This is a broad category in which parasites like home page hijackers and search hijackers can be included.
Home page hijackers change the start page of the user’s browser to some specific sites and some notorious of these are very difficult to remove.
Search hijackers change the search behaviour of the user’s browser and when user searches for something on the Internet, these search sites give them the results.
Usually both of the hijackers stated above work on clickthrough systems. Here they are affiliates to other companies which give them money according to the hits they recieve through them. So, the ultimate goal of hijackers is to make the users click on the links through which they earn their revenue. As this is a difficult task, the program authors go extreme ways to achieve it and create difficult to remove parasites. Recent examples of such parasite are CoolWebSearch and AboutBlank.
And to add to my pain..both of these %#%#% was found on my system…it was really hard to get them outtaf my pc.
Dialers:
Dialers are programs that promise to make some “premium content” availible to the users by making calls through them. All their objective is to make the users dial the number which are usually long distance numbers of their affiliates.
Tracking Cookies:
Cookies were meant to be used for customizing the websites according to the user’s preferences. But marketing companies found another use of them. This useful feature is being abused by marketing companies by putting “third party cookies”. Third party cookies means cookies stored by websites other than you are visiting – most often put through banners and ad rotators. These cookies can keep track of what sites you visit that contains their ads.
Keyloggers:
Keyloggers arent thankfully installed by marketing companies. Usually they are installed by some trojans or BAD hackers. Here bad hackers refer to those breed of computer users who use such programs to break into other’s computers to steal passwords or to destroy those systems. These programs monitor each keypress on your system and keep track of them and send it back to their originators. There are many sophisticated keyloggers which have their own SMTP engine to mail back the tracking records.
So How do these programs get installed ?
These programs are usually installed as bundled with other programs. While most users dont care to read the Terms and Conditions of the programs they are installing, third party tools such as these are installed easily.
Browser hijackers are usually installed as ActiveX controls while the user is visiting their affiliate’s websites. The most common source of spywares are porn and cracks websites. These websites promise the user to enable them to view their content if they install these add ons.
A new class of them is called betraywares. These programs promise to remove spywares but they are themselves housing many of them. A whole new breed of search assistants, pop up blockers, online form filling tools, password keepers comes under this list.
So how and when will u know that you …ahem…your system is infected?? Usually when spywares are installed on your system, your network traffic increases. If you feel your computer is not behaving the way it was supposed to be, most probably you are infected. You should check what programs are getting loaded when the computer is starting up and what programs are running in the task manager. If you notice some suspicious entries in task manager or startup list, look out what programs are these. If you are on an always on connection, you should monitor the network traffic of your computer. For Adl users check the activity led on your modem..If it blinks continously when you are idle and no downloading is taking place…thats it..Your system is infected.!To remove spywares Programs like Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware can be used. Spyware Blaster is a great utility that will not let the spywares getting installed in the first place. All these program should be updated regularly as new parasites gets discovered daily. And our Trusty microsoft has launched a malware detector. This tool will help to remove specific, prevalent malicious software from infected systems. Because computers can appear to function normally when infected, Microsoft advises you to run this tool even if your computer seems to be fine. In addition to using this tool, you should use an up-to-date antivirus product to help protect your computer from other malicious software.A new version of this tool is released on the second Tuesday of every month These new versions will be available from the Microsoft Download Center—this page—as well as from Windows Update / Automatic Updates. .An online version of the tool is also available. It is recommended that Windows XP users use Windows Update / Automatic Updates to download the tool. If you are using any other version of Windows for which this tool is supported, please download the tool from this page or run the online version of the tool at least once a month to ensure that you are using the latest version of this software.

..i hav checked it and seems like it works!!..But Spybot and adaware is my choice
